7 Reasons to Work Abroad as a volunteer

Choosing to work as a volunteer overseas is a great way to open your mind to other ways of life and different cultures and languages. Here are the top seven reasons why people decide to take off on a volunteering adventure.

All volunteer positions, whether they're locally based or a thousand miles from home, offer the satisfaction of altruism, but those who choose to volunteer overseas often feel a deeper sense of happiness in this respect. This type of work often involves long days and having to give up creature comforts and ultimately this sacrifice leads to a great feeling of satisfaction.

Learning a New Language
Any volunteer work in a foreign country will inevitably improve your language skills, although the extent of this will depend on how long you choose to stay there. At the very least, you will learn how to hold a basic conversation in another language, as daily living in a different country necessitates this. Many volunteer programmes offer basic language courses which can be of great use both during and after the volunteering experience.

Improve Your CV
Making the decision to volunteer abroad also offers plenty of benefits to those looking to further their careers. Volunteer work of any kind will help to boost your CV, as employers associate it with people who are enthusiastic, motivated and caring. The additional benefits of working within a team in a challenging environment and learning a foreign language will also appeal to employers.

Another Culture
One of the best things about doing volunteer work abroad is that it allows people to spend a long period of time immersing themselves in a new culture. Many volunteer programmes include accommodation with a local family, so volunteers have the chance to really get involved with the local people and their way of life. Unlike a holiday, during which you explore a place for a few days, a volunteering job will allow you to truly experience what life is like in that country.

New Skills and Experience
Working in a foreign country as a volunteer is a fantastic way to acquire new skills and experience. There are hundreds of different kinds of volunteer programmes, so you can easily find one which is relevant to your chosen career path. Whether you're interested in politics, health care, animal care, social work or journalism, you can find a place which needs help in this area and will allow you to learn some very valuable new skills.

Another reason to volunteer abroad is that it can change a person's character for the better and give you a sense of perspective about life. Seeing the problems of poorer countries and how the people there handle the challenges they face every day is a great way to become a more compassionate, caring and empathetic person.

Lastly, a few months, weeks or even years spent volunteering abroad can give you a great sense of accomplishment. The knowledge that you have made a positive impact on the world is a good feeling to have, as is the knowledge that you are capable of dealing with difficult situations and living without so many consumer goods.

It's certainly worth taking the time out to research and find a volunteer programme which is suited to your skills and knowledge, as a period of time spend volunteering abroad can be a life-changing experience.

The New York Aquarium

New York is a very big city and there is a wide variety of things to do while visiting it. However, one of its most interesting features is the New York Aquarium. It is a place that attracts more and more tourists annually, and here you can have a great time while admiring the exhibits and attending all kinds of interesting activities.

What is more, it is the oldest aquarium in the United States and has been opened to visitors since 1896. It has many exhibits and events that you can enjoy, and this is what makes it one of the most popular places in town. Also, it spreads over 14 acres and presents over 350 species of aquatic life. The place aims to raise public awareness about the dangers threatening the wildlife in oceans and teach the public what can be done to protect it. Moreover, research is done here, at the Aquarium’s Osborn Laboratories of Marine Science, and several investigations on topics regarding the dolphins, sharks, coral reefs and many others.

It addition, it can be just a place to spend a lovely evening with your family. Among the most interesting things you can do here is shark feeding. It might appear slightly dangerous to some of you, but it isn’t at all. It is really fun. You are given different kinds of food and you can see what they enjoy the most. Although, sharks are generally known for eating animals or plankton, now you can discover what other kinds of food they enjoy.

Moreover, after you have fed the sharks, how about chit-chatting with an octopus? You are given the chance to learn more about these amazing sea creatures. They are playful and intelligent, and you will sure have a great time with them. You surely didn’t know that they can solve puzzles.

Next, you will be able to attend a sea lion celebration at the aqua-theater. These are the most talented animals in here, they can crawl, bark on cue, dive as you want, and they know a lot of funny tricks. It will sure be interesting to watch. They are the great stars in the area. It is a chance to learn and to have a little fun. They are more flexible and intelligent than you might think. Also, professional photos will be taken and you can purchase them to have a nice memory of your visit here. The good news is that the program continues through the fall so travelers will have plenty of time to attend.

Furthermore, if you are tired of visiting and you feel the need to grab a bite, the aquarium incorporates several places where you can enjoy a delicious lunch. The New York Aquarium Seaside Café is one of the most popular and it is opened round the clock. It offers tasty, cold and hot dishes as well as snack and different beverages. As it is expected, the meals include seafood prepared from sustainable resources in order to protect the wildlife. In the summer months you can eat your lunch at one of the vending booths or at the picnic tables on the Plaza.

Indispensable Travel Insurance

My kids had started their vacation after the exams.  Two teenage boys, full of energy and raring to go, easily bored at home, the sweltering heat of Dubai in May; well, something had to be done!!  My husband couldn’t accompany me on any of the tours that were being suggested.  Finally, we decided to visit my cousin sister in London and spend time with her family for a fortnight.  My family thought it was a good idea as they hadn’t visited their cousins since almost two years.  My husband decided to make the arrangements for our travel.

One question that invariably rose was if it was necessary to have travel insurance or we could do without it since we were visiting and staying with our family members.  We mulled over the issue and finally decided it was better to be safe than sorry, especially with our energetic teenagers.  We opted for the travel insurance no matter how secure our trip was going to be.

We reached London and were happy to be in a pleasant and cooler atmosphere.  We occupied ourselves with small shopping trips, watching plays and sightseeing the nearby places during the first week.  After about ten days, we decided to take a ‘hop-on, hop-off bus tour’ that would take two days and we would be able to cover more of the sightseeing of the famous places.  We booked ourselves and were very excited getting into the open double-decker buses.  My boys were super-excited!

At one of the stops on the second day, as I was descending the stairs, I tripped and fell headlong to the bottom.  I had fractured my right wrist and bruised my ankle.  My cousin was of great help, nevertheless, I informed my husband and he told me not to worry since I had already started calculating the cost and how my budget would go for a toss!  After the initial first-aid and getting myself into a cast, I felt remorse as the holiday had been marred.  My boys kept encouraging me and called me ‘wounded soldier’!

In the meantime, my husband had informed me that he had got in touch with the insurance company and that I just had to carry all the medical prescriptions and bills duly signed by the doctors in London. That’s all!  He was helped by the staff and the travel insurance company dealt with the claim in a smooth manner.  Within a week, we were reimbursed. Frankly, I felt relieved at knowing that the cost was covered and wouldn’t make a hole in my pocket!

The Natural Beauty of the Ozark Mountains

In 2010, the film “Winter’s Bone” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The film, about a high school aged girl searching for her fugitive father, received a whirlwind of acclaim for its gripping storytelling and the star making performance from Jennifer Lawrence. But what really caught the attention of most film critics and filmgoers alike was the film’s grim and dour portrayal of the Ozarks, an American region that has surprisingly been snubbed by filmmakers. While this particular film’s director, Debra Granik, may have decided to film the Ozarks in cool, harsh tones that paint the region as desperate and poverty stricken, what residents of the Ozarks know is that they live in one of the country’s most beautiful terrains.

A Plateau?
The Ozarks cover around 47,000 square miles, extending into four different states: Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and a very tiny corner of Kansas.Although the region is oft referred to as the Ozark Mountains, the fact of the matter is that the land is actually more akin to a high and deeply dissected plateau, but what a plateau. There are parts of this land, particularly in Arkansas, that seem to be a refuge for miles upon miles of darkly colored trees, unique to the Ozarks to be sure. The Ozarks are home to two particularly famous national forests, the Ozark National Forest and the St. Francis National Forest, both located in northern Arkansas. The St. Francis Forest is the only one in the national forest system where visitors can visit the shoreline and see for themselves the grandiosity of the Mississippi River. It covers a little over 20,000 acres, and plays host to some beautiful wildlife, such as whitetail deer, wild turkey and waterfowl.Visitors are welcome to hunt, camp, and ride horses through these lush, hardwood forests.

HikingThrough Beauty
But just because the Ozarks are closer to being a plateau than a mountainous terrain, don’t mistake that notion for an absence of some amazing hiking trails.Indeed, the Ozarks have some of the best in the country. One of the most picturesque is at Hawksbill Crag/Whittaker Point. This trail can provide unrivaled entertainment for those interested in geology, as one can find an abundance of unique rocks along the way of this three mile hike. The hike concludes on a thrilling rock outcrop that sticks out from a gorgeous bluff forest.Hideout Hollow Trail is a beautiful trail that gives hikers a glorious view of some of the greenest forestry the country has to offer. The two mile trail also goes by some exquisite waterfall areas.

Water and Wildlife

The Ozarks is not short on such waterfall areas either, nor is it short of extraordinary lakes and streams.Big Spring in Missouri stays true to its name by being one of the largest springs in the United States, certainly the biggest in the Ozarks. On average, 276 million gallons of cool spring water flow through the spring every day.Animal enthusiasts will particularly fall in love with this spring, given that there are roughly 25 species of animal that exist only in this area. The Ozark National Forest has two of the country’s most well regarded waterfalls, and they’re known as the twin falls. They two falls are right next to each other. It is not the easiest spot to get to, but those who reach the falls are in for a scenic treat.

To name all of the beautiful places of the Ozarks would be something of a chore, maybe even possible. But these are some of the reasons why the Ozarks are indeed one of the most naturally beautiful regions that every American should have the pleasure of experiencing.

Amazing Chillout Scenes in Nepal

Image from http://www.mount-everest.net/summit.html

Pokhara
Pokara is a warm part of Nepal. Pokahara is home to beautiful temples, shrines and Buddhist practice which makes it ideal for a chillout. Many people often consider trekking to be a high intensity activity, with lots of hard work and sleeping rough, but trekking through Pokhara could not be more different. The Nepal climate is such that you often barely need a tent to cover you as the night air is cooler and less humid than the sticky daytime. In a place like Pokhara you are met with calm.

The sheer beauty of Pokhara is enough to unwind, and everywhere you go you with be met with the soothing flute sounds of Nepal’s Buddhist music, meditation and chanting. There are massive areas of natural greenery which is very smoothing and calming, especially if you have travelled from a busy area like Kathmandu.

Wherever you stay, you will be surrounded by mountains, blue sky and bright green foliage. Pokhara has a city centre, so you will be able to shop and do the usual tourist things. You will also be able to rent a taxi driver for the day, to visit the World Peace Pagoda which is a temple in Pokhara. To enter the temple you must remove your shoes (you must remove your shoes before entering most buildings in Buddhist countries) and from there, you will be able to get an ariel view of the town high up in the mountain. Absolute bliss!

Pokhara also has an enormous lake which you can raft across, and small markets in which you buy trinkets and treasures to remind you of your time in Nepal. There is also a waterfall in Pokhara called Debbies Waterfall, where you can picnic and eat on the grass next to the waterfall. It’s cooler here as well.

Everest Panorama
If you are lucky enough to trek to Everest Panorama when you visit Nepal, you are in for real treat. The Everest Panorama trek is shorter than other treks through Nepal and is excellent for chillout because of the slow pace and scenic views. Camping as you go along and spending the nights in the open air by a real fire is exceptionally relaxing. Trekking through Nepal, while on Nepal tours, towards Everest Panorama usually stops at a few famous chillout locations, so that you unwind a little more with each ascent that you make. First stop is usually the Tengboche Monastery which is 3850metres high. Once you are up there, you can go into the monastery to relax, with the smell of incense in the background, absolute silence, fresh mountain air and a view of Everest. It is still quite warm, not as hot as ground level and not too cold which makes it ideal for absorbing some sunrays without breaking too much of a sweat. Trekking up still higher, this trek will take you along a Sherpa village. Sherpa villages are very quiet and rural, and a unique to Nepal.

A Da Vinci At The Louvre And A Disney Themepark - From The Sublime To The Ridiculous Amounts Of Fun

A good vacation will have a variety of places to see. A short vacation will unfortunately limit how many destinations you can have on your itinerary. However, you can have the best of both worlds by deciding to have a deep, emotional experience looking at Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and other magnificent pieces of art at the Louvre before following that up with an awesome, exhilarating time at Disneyland Paris.

The Louvre is not only the world’s most visited art museum, but it is a deeply moving experience to walk through its halls and look upon the thousands of pieces of art on display here. Imagining what the artist was thinking and feeling while the art was being made is an emotional experience that is best had at the Louvre.

The Mona Lisa is a painting that is perhaps the best known in the world. It was painted around 1505 and is permanently on display at the Louvre. Staring at the half-length painting and trying to determine what the woman is expressing is something that people have being doing for centuries. Visitors often head here first after purchasing Louvre tickets and entering the facility.

The Louvre is so full of incredible pieces of art that you could easily spend a week looking at it all. However, if you want to simply view the vast majority of the pieces of art while quickly walking by, the entire collection may be viewed in a day. It all depends on how in depth you want your artistic experience to be and how much time you have to devote to the museum.

For a complete change of pace, a trip to Disneyland Paris fits the bill perfectly. This is a place where you can go and revisit your childhood spent watching Disney cartoons and movies. Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse will be signing autographs and are available for hugs. You may even be able to share your breakfast experience with Disney characters.

Thrill seekers will want to head straight for the rides, however. The best options for those seeking as exhilarating a ride as possible include the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Indiana Jones et le Temple du Péril, Space Mountain: Mission 2 and Star Tours. Those looking for a more relaxing, yet still very fun ride, will enjoy heading for the Disneyland Railroad or Pirates of the Caribbean after using their Disneyland Paris tickets.

Production Courtyard is a destination for those looking to be entertained. CinéMagique is a theatre production with live actors interacting with filmed scenes. Stitch Encounter allows visitors to have a discussion with Stitch from “Lilo& Stitch.” The Studio Tram Tour: Behind the Magic is a fun experience in which riders are driven around the movie sets. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror takes visitors riding an elevator into the twilight zone.

Cardiff Guide

Cardiff is not just the UK’s youngest capital city but also Europe’s. With businesses booming and house prices rising comfortably, it is little wonder this Welsh wonder is becoming such a desirable place to live, but more importantly an exceptional place to visit. Cardiff sets Wales on the world map for diversity, as this modern, cosmopolitan hub sits on top of a country known for a country way of life, secret monasteries and mysterious druid activity! There is little wonder that Cardiff is Wales’ leading light. Close to the English border with its neighbouring cities of Bath and Bristol, Cardiff is easily accessible by car and rail and having its own airport makes it a gateway to the rest of Wales.

The city has all the modernities expected of a capital, its own world class Rugby team, hundreds of shops, cafes and restaurants and a finely flowing stream of cultural activity. The events calendar is constantly packed with things to do, from mainstream pop acts, to art exhibitions and food festivals such as the International Food Festival which takes place in July, or for cheese fans head to Cardiff in September for the Great British Cheese Festival, where not only can you sample some of the UK’s finest, but also participate in cookery lessons!

Cardiff’s depths of interesting things to see and do, don’t end here though. With many interesting buildings dotted around the city, any keen historian, or architecture fanatic, will be kept busy taking lots of snaps! Cardiff Castle is a must see for any roman history fan as its history stretches back to more than 2000 years ago, being used as a great fortress right into the Second World War era as an air raid shelter. Today its perfect design draws in hundreds of visitors to wander round the battlements or even dine in traditional Welsh style in the Castle’s Undercroft Quarters.

For those that prefer to keep up with the times however, Cardiff has much to offer the cosmopolitan visitor. Shopping in Edwardian and Victorian style arcades gives retail therapy a much cosier feel than you’d get in another capital city. Head to Morgan’s arcade to see Spiller’s record store, the UK’s oldest record store which has reopened three times since its first in 1894! Alternatively, you could pop into Castle Arcade which was built around 1887 the arcade has a very interesting construction with several wooden footbridges, small shops and a beautiful gallery!

After a busy day of sight-seeing and emptying your wallet you’re going to want to find some food and somewhere to rest your head for the night. Before kicking back and fully resting, head to Cardiff’s dedicated restaurant quarter where you can find a wide range of Welsh and international treats to satisfy your taste buds. The Social at the Park Hotel by Thistle has 2 AA rosettes and they serve a fantastic variety of fresh and locally sourced ingredients cooked to perfection. The restaurant’s luxury design and comfortable setting makes it the perfect place to sample a wide range of cocktails, wines and beers. Afterward a heavy meal (and maybe a few too many of those delicious cocktails!) you will want to find somewhere to wind down and rest. Finding a place to stay is easily done when you arrive, however you will probably want to book before you turn up! Many visitors recommend Number 62 Cathedral Road as the perfect stop for anyone seeking a warm Welsh Welcome. Rates start at £49 a night and you will get an en-suite, well furnished room.

It’s very easy to fall in love with the forests of Roopkund trekking trail. It was dream come true for me while trekking in Ladakh.  Almost 2.5 hours of trekking through the dense oak forests with a lengthy wide carpet of brown leaves kept me quite captivated. The bright sunlight peeping through the trees makes a curtain of light and dark to walk through. After a couple of hours trek alongside beautiful and awe- inspiring foliage, I reached near a stream of water falling from much above me and the water was surprisingly clean, so I refilled my water bottle and settled for a much deserved break. The forest around the stream is lush green and very inviting. The thought of camping in Bedni Bugyal kept me motivated to hike further and it was truly worth it. The camping site nestled amidst the spectacular view of Himalayas was a perfect setting. The next morning I woke up well rested and was eager to reach roopkund. As I approached roopkund, the view of forest and greenery was transformed into a vast stark white blanket spread over the gigantic mountains of Junargali Flank.
While in Ladakh, I was sure not to miss other charming trekking trails. So, with a map in my hand, I headed to Stok Kangri trekking trail and visited the artistically designed monasteries in Shey and Thikse, Spiktuk monastery being my favorite. Hiking alongside Markha Valley, I crossed several authentic Tibetan villages with their old world charm, people are warm and friendly and there is always a local tea shop to take a quick break. With a backdrop of fantastic snowcapped peaks of Karakoram and magnificent view of Zanskar Mountains, it is a very rewarding trip.
Goechala trekking in Sikkim amidst the Himalayas is a romantic experience. Early morning as I opened my eyes I was greeted by the view of thick mist flowing on hilltops and inviting me to explore the high altitudes. After treating myself with a sumptuous meal, I headed out with my backpack full of all the necessary items. My most memorable stretch was through meadows of Dzongri at 12,981 feet. The existence of magnificent peaks of Kanchenjunga throughout the trail was nature at its best. The view from Dzongri made me keep my eyes peeled as I saw a glimpse of snow peaks of Pandim.

I was spellbound on my next trekking expedition, the vast stretch of Chadar trek at an altitude of 12,628feet. It’s a frozen sheet and is extremely attractive; they are unbelievably gorgeous frozen waterfalls on the way. I was literally walking on a sheet of ice and I was very careful as there are places where ice is broken and I could see dark blue chilled water floating underneath. Ice path glistens under bright sunlight and I explored every inch of this bright isolated path on my own pace.
My next interesting trekking expedition took me to Ladakhi capital, Leh. From here, I started on Markha valley trekking trail, crossing rugged terrain on one side with barren hills and at the same time tiny villages’ scattered on the other side with barley, wheat and a lot more crops given the whole place a bright and fresh look. It is a considerably smaller stretch and I completed it in 3 days. I took photos of rare blue sheep and few other animals and birds while crossing through the Hemis National Park.
One of the most beautiful treks I have experienced has to be the Kudremukh trek in Western Ghats. The green blanket spread over the Ghats looks mesmerizing and mysterious at the same time. I wasn’t sure before I started what surprises are there waiting for me. I took a car ride from Bangalore to Kalasa and then headed to Kudramukha town to get a permit to enter the forests. After getting my permit, I reached Mullodi and was welcomed by thundering Somavathi waterfalls on my right. I stared open mouthed at the surprisingly beautiful falls before staring the trail. The sound of water falling was too loud and I kept walking away from it till it became silent and the forest started to thicken around me. After an hour of trekking, I reached the Lone tree point and took a short break to rest. There were flocks of deer grazing on the green carpet and watching them playing around in their natural abode was a high point for me. Kudramukha peak is visible at many points but not always as the trail is through around it. Once I reached the summit, the wind was blowing super-fast and I had to sit down to keep my balance.
My passion to explore mountain ranges in India didn’t stop at that. My next trip was to Hanuman Tibba trek in Himalayan ranges. This was a comparatively short trip and I completed it in 3 days. The less height of this peak at 20,000feet is covered by its unmatched beauty. The mountain is almost an exact pyramid shape with amazing view from all three sides. I was spellbound to see the gorgeous glaciers on one side of this huge structure. The other side touches the nearest road to Solang. Camping in groups with complete strangers was an additional experience that I had not planned and it was really fun.
Near the city of Pune is where I went for my next trekking expedition on the Rajgad Trekking trail. The stretch is not very difficult and I reached the summit from the base camp in around 3 hours. The chor darwaja is an awesome place surrounded with beautiful landscapes and the weather was a little cloudy. Walking in cold breeze alongside tree canopy trail was my most enjoyable moment of this trip. And once I reached the top, I was filled with peace with the first look at the Padmavati Lake. I decided to stay a night at the temple near the top; the greed of clean air and green pastures to look at in the morning was very tempting. And the wishes were fulfilled as the first rays of sun brightened the whole world, my eyes couldn’t have asked for a better view.
This time I went to ‘God’s own country’, Kerala to take a hiking trip on Chembra Trekking trail in Wayanad. Nestled in the beautiful Western Ghats is this trekking trail that took me to a lake that I have heard has never dried. All around me was misty clouds simulating my senses and the heart shaped lake made me feel for a split second that I might be imagining. Can there really be a place so out of the world and heavenly. It was cold but not freezing and I had made all the arrangement to spend a night under the stars camping. However, around 10pm, the air became chilled and the weather was very cold. The next day I descended down I treated myself with some yummy Kerala dishes cooked in coconut oil.
The never ending beautiful land of India took me to Uttaranchal for my next trekking trip. Adventurous is now my last name and I was quite attracted by the name itself, “Valley of Flowers”. This trek is fortunately hidden from the growing civilization and is paused in time from some other era altogether. There were alpine flowers of every possible color all around me and thick dew drops rested on them adding to the beauty of already mesmerizing flower beds. The enchanting valley nestled in the western Himalayan ranges of Garhwal hills is what paradise must be like.

Helpful Backpacking Tips For A Memorable Adventure

Going on a backpacking trip? It is always fun to go on an adventure and experience nature. But before you become too excited, make sure that you are packed with everything that you need. Here is a simple guide on how to make your backpacking trip a worthwhile experience.

First things first, you need to study the map of the location you are going. Calculate your estimated time of arrival. Do not discount the possibility of delays so insert extra time for such eventualities.

Make sure that you have secured the necessary permits and made advanced reservation of the campsite. You should make yourself aware of local regulations to avoid being fined. Study the weather conditions in the area you are visiting and always prepare yourself for the worst weather.

Be prepared for changing conditions, temperature changes in higher altitude as well as in the evenings. Veer away from wearing jeans or cotton clothes instead go for polypropylene, wool, or breathable materials that can dry quickly. Always bring your rain gear. Bring extra clothes. This will depend on the location as well as the season you are backpacking.  As much as you are bringing rain gear with you, do carry items that will also protect you from the sun such as sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.

Navigation devices will come in handy as this will prevent you from being lost. A map and a compass is always a necessity. But make sure you know how to read them otherwise they will be futile. It would be good to have a GPS system but they are not 100% reliable because they may run out of batteries or may malfunction depending on your location.

Flashlights and other sources of light are also important tools that you need to prepare for your backpacking trip. We’l l never know when the light will go out so you should be ready for these things. Make sure you have extra batteries and a backup flashlight. Walking in darkness is not only uncomfortable but also dangerous.

A first aid kit is a must when traveling. This should include medicines, a band-aid, gauze, alcohol, among others. There are ready made kits that can be purchased in local health stores and even in establishments like Walmart.

Bring with you sports bottles to keep your body hydrated. Dehydration can set in quickly when backpacking so drink lots of water. Having emergency shelter will also be helpful in case you need them.

Follow these tips and you’re ready to go backpacking. Enjoy and have a safe trip.

3 Interesting Facts About Pakistan You’d Never Learn From Media

Pakistan is that unfortunate country which, despite being such a gifted land, is known for all the wrong reasons. If truth be told, there are hardly many countries on the face of this earth which are as rich and diverse in culture as Pakistan. The following post is written with an intention to show the other side of Pakistan which the worlds seems oblivious to.
  1. There has been lot of discussion about the long life expectancy of people in Japan and India. What most of the people do not know is that the locals in Hunza Valley, Pakistan have the highest life expectancy in the world. There are dozens of men and women who have seen more than a hundred birthdays and are living an active and healthy life in Hunza. Several British Historians have mentioned in their books that 80 year olds in Hunza look no older than 50.
Historians believe that local Hunza people are descendants of the Shangri La people. Shangri La is believed to be a land where time slows down and leaves very little effect on aging men and women. I am sure you would like to know more about the lifestyle and eating habits of the Burusho aka the local people of Hunza but if you could get a chance to check the natural beauty of the Hunza Valley, higher rate of life expectancy would become a very small reason for you to want to spend the rest of your life there.
  2. Snow Leopards found in the Gilgit district of Pakistan are notorious for attacking people during winters. The growing population of Abbottabad and villages around it is resulting in deforestation. This deforestation is destroying the natural habitat of snow leopards and other wildlife they prey upon. Initially these leopards attacked the cattle and sheep but later on, they were forced to attack human. More than 20 of these leopards have been captured and released in the wilderness far, far away from human population. The snow leopards of the Hindu Kush region move deeper in the mountains during summer. The rare sight of these leopards has been the topic of many documentaries. The deep trenches, and unexplored mountains of Koh-e-Hindu Kush, with extremely cold climate, for the most part, have remained uncharted. Since spotting and filming these snow leopards is very hard because of which only a handful of their video footages and pictures could be taken, experts believe that it is an endangered species and needs to be protected accordingly. The quest is to first locate them!
  3. The Northern Part of Pakistan is frequently visited by tourists from all around the world, so it is common knowledge that K2 and Nanga Parbat are located in Pakistan. What most of you do not know is that 25% of the highest, most dangerous and yet to be fully explore summits of the world are also in Pakistan.
Out of the 14 eight thousander mountains of the world, 5 are in Pakistan. For the good part of the year, the northern and north western region of Pakistan remains covered under thick blankets of snow. These snow covered, sharp edged and inaccessible areas make perfect habitat for animals such as markhor, snow leopard, Marco Polo sheep, Siberian ibex, Himalayan goral, Eurasian lynx, bharal and peregrine falcon.
May and June is the time of the year when there are chances of you coming across these shy yet territorial and savage animals in remote valleys and mountains of Himalaya and Hindu Kush region of Pakistan.
  • Some of the mountains which more famous among hikers include: Nanga Parbat, Shispare, K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, II, III, IV, Batura, Distaghil Sar, Rakaposhi, Malubiting, Saltoro Kangri, Trivor, Masherbrum, and Saraghrar.

Where in Australia is the Strange Town of 1770?

Perhaps a contender for the world’s strangest town name, the town of 1770 is a name you’ll want to remember if you’re looking for an idyllic getaway on the shores of the Great Barrier Reef. The town didn’t even have a name until 1939, when they decided to call it 1770 in honor of the day Captain James Cook anchored the Endeavour about 2 miles off shore on May 24, 1770. In many ways, 1770 is much the same in 2012 as it was back then, almost 250 years ago.

Also spelled out as Seventeen Seventy, any way you spell it, 1770 is as unusual as its name. What will you find there? Aside from not much at all except spectacularly beautiful and relatively empty subtropical beaches, these are a few of its claims to fame:
  • 1770 is the northernmost surf spot on Australia’s east coast.
  • It is the nearest access point to the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Seventeen Seventy is one of only 3 eastern Australian towns where the sun sets over the water.
1770’s nearest neighbor, Agnes Waters, is a little bit better known, but not much. In fact, this part of Queensland is in many ways an inside secret, which makes it an ideal place to visit. The expression “laid back” describes the atmosphere perfectly, yet there is plenty of opportunity for adventure, too. For example, the only way you can get to the uninhabited Lady Musgrave Island is from 1770. This tiny island is less than 4 miles in circumference and is entirely surrounded by spectacular coral reefs. It is also home to sea turtles, who will accompany you while you snorkel on the reefs. Lady Musgrave is closed to humans between the months of February and March, when it is “booked out” by the turtles, who use its beaches for their hatchlings.

Agnes Waters/1770 is often called the Discovery Coast not only because of its discovery by Captain Cook, but because there is so much there for visitors to discover. Between the pristine empty beaches, the estuaries and the lush subtropical hinterland, it’s the kind of place that is perfect for the Robinson Crusoe in all of us. To make things easier, though, you can take the LARC tour out to Bustard Head lightstation, rent a bike or 3 wheel cruiser for two.
Seventeen Seventy and Agnes Water, while not exactly metropolises, have some of the most beautiful beachfront accommodations you’ll find anywhere in the world. With shimmering silver sands and tranquil turquoise waters at your doorstep, you’ll be forgiven for wondering why Captain Cook and his crew didn’t simply come ashore and stay.
Rob enjoys exploring interesting towns and place like The Town of 1770. To explore some of these towns yourself check out our Town of 1770 Accommodation as well as other interesting accommodation options in other towns and cities across Australia.

The Internet Is The Ultimate London Theatre Guide

It can be exhausting trying to book tickets for West End shows without some kind of London theatre guide.   Unless you have been heartily recommended to go by a friend whose taste levels you trust implicitly or you simply have to see the star no matter what, we always like a little reassurance when making our theatre purchase.   Most shows are advertised in newspapers, on billboards outside the theatre or on ticket agent websites with the official poster for the show and a couple of choice review quotes: "astonishing", "thrilling", "a must-see"…  what show would advertise itself with its bad reviews after all?    There might be a few lines summarizing the piece and its cast to whet your appetite but aside from the carefully selected glowing reviews how else do we know if we've backed a gulden?

We can always trawl through the reviews in various newspapers to get a more balanced reaction.   This takes quite a bit of advance preparation to make sure we check all the papers on the day after a show's press night - and is certainly no good if the show opened a decade ago.    If only we had somewhere where past reviews were collated, as well as those of regular Joe Public.   Luckily, we do - the internet.   These days it is so easy to search the net and within seconds we can be scouring through reams of opinions on a show.    Simply type in the name of the show and the word 'reviews', or hone your search with other keywords such as 'newspapers you trust', or even the word 'bad' to get a balanced view.   There are even websites that are dedicated to showing a balanced mix of reviews, posting the good, the bad and the ugly.

Even handier these days are the increasing number of bloggers out there.   Theatre-addicts will often have their own blogs writing all their thoughts on the shows they see - just type in the words 'theatre blogs' or something similar.   Once you have found a few whose opinions you share on other shows you know they are likely to have similar tastes to you and you can click to follow them.    They are more likely to be unbiased towards a show - they are unlikely to have anything to gain by pushing one show or ripping another apart just for the sake of it.    In fact once they have developed a loyal following their integrity is paramount meaning you will usually get their honest opinion.
Of course at the end of the day everyone has different tastes, but it's always good to compare a few bloggers thoughts with those from other sources to help guide your choices.    You may also find that they bring shows to your attention that you didn't know about.

It's not just the quality of the plays that you can gauge by surfing the net.  All manner of details are out there, with sites that explain the benefit of sitting in certain seats in a theatre over others vis-à-vis view or pricing; information of where a theatre is and how to get there and addresses and telephone numbers you may need by using this you can get the London theatre tickets online.    Booking agencies will often have pages on their website directing you straight to their special offers knowing full well that everyone likes a bargain.    This could save hours trawling through each show's individual pages.    Price comparison sites will also help you save time when making a booking.   You can also find guidance about the perils you could come across - simply type a question such as 'why should I pay a booking fee?', 'what are ticket touts?' or 'which ticket agents can I trust?' and you will get a myriad of responses you can then filter through.

If you want to go to the next level, you can always set up a blog of your own, giving people your own views about the good and bad in Theatre land. After all, why shouldn't you be a London theatre guide too?

Are You Game For Some Fishing Adventure?

No, we are not saying that you are not brave enough to handle a fishing adventure somewhere out there. We are just saying that fishing in the deep blue sea for the great big fish is not every ones cup of tea. And there is nothing better than combining your love for fishing with a holiday abroad- an unknown and exotic destination. If the open ocean and the battle of strength between you and the mighty game fish excite you, then this is the perfect holiday of you.

Deep sea fishing is unlike any other adventure. It is also the most relaxing, exhilarating invigorating ways to spend your holiday. There are various regions all across the globe where you would be spoilt for choice selecting the perfect location. It helps you to see the world around from a different and beautiful perspective. The water is serene, the breeze is cooler, the sun is stronger than you realize, and then there is the mighty fish, glistening in the sun as it fights you to get that hook loose.

From blue sharks to bonefish, marlins to sailfish, tarpons to mackerels, tunas to swordfish, billfish and more, you are not going to get tired of it. If you happen to be in Australia, Gold Coast, Sydney, Cairns, Brisbane are some most fabulous fishing spots.

If you search on the internet you would come across various charters that cater to clients interested in deep sea fishing adventures. It is better to do a little research and background study than to jump and make a decision. And there is not just fishing. You could go snorkeling, diving and swimming in the most scenic spots! Enjoy the sumptuous meals after hours of spectacular fishing from the charter boats.

But one has to be careful when on such a trip. You would spend a few hours under the sun and since the water id cold, you would not feel the sun burn on your skin, better to stay sun safe! Use a hat and ample sun block on the trip A good quality sunglass is a must- the glare on the water is beautiful no doubt but it is a lot on the eyes. Carry a long sleeved shirt or a light jacket; it gets chilly on the water at times.  Getting sea sick is nothing uncommon- thus it is better to take the required meds before boarding the ship.

If this is your first time going on an adventure fishing trip, so a little research on the internet about what to do and what not to do while aboard a fishing charter. The safety measures you should follow and the tackles that you must carry. Most charters however offer tackles on rent. There are also certain etiquettes that you must abide by.

Start making reservations with your favorite charter and get ready to experience thrill like never before.  It is truly going to be one of those things in life that you would be glad not to have missed and lived long enough to share the story with the little ones.
