Golf in Western Australia

Although some see golf as a good walk ruined, there are others who live for the game. The sport is revered in Scotland with courses such as St Andrews and Troon known the world over, and with so many of the early settlers in Australia coming from England's bonnie northern neighbour, it's no surprise that they saw the opportunity to build a few world class courses in the new world discovery.

Although more southerly states such as Tasmania and Victoria may be thought of as the greener of Australia's areas, Western Australia also boasts its fair share of golfing paradises.

Lake Karrinyup

Ranked as the 11th best course in Australia by Golf Digest this year, Lake Karrinyup is thought by many to be Western Australia’s top golf course. This year holds big things for the course, with the inaugural Perth International Golf Championship to be held there in October 2012. The three day event will become Australia’s richest tournament and hopes to attract star names such as Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood.

The Vines

Perth has held prestigious tournaments before, with The Vines Resort and Country Club hosting several Heineken Classic events and the Johnny Walker Classic in both 2006 and 2009. The five-star course is around 35km to the north east of Perth CBD, bordering Vale Aveley in the Swan District. Although it has previously been included in the Top 100, this year saw The Vines sit just outside the elite group, along with other famous courses such as Albany and Bunbury.

Kalgoorlie

Entering the Golf Digest Top 100 for the first time this year was Kalgoorlie golf course, a newly established course 600km to the east of Perth. The course was designed by Graham Marsh and had government backing, turning a dusty dumpsite into one of the country’s top golf courses for a fee of around $18m.

WA Golf Club

In at 52, up nine places, is the Western Australian Golf Club. The club was founded in 1928 and has a long and successful history. The WA Golf Club is still seen as one of the top courses in the area, and hosted the 2010 WA Open and was voted top course in the state that year. The course is one of the closest to Perth CBD, just 7km to the north in the Tuart Hill area.

There are many reasons to visit Western Australia, and even more to settle in the state, but for golf fans this array of top courses may be the one that pushes them into move.
