Wondering what to do on your Gap Year?

Most people will not retire until they are in their late 60’s or early 70’s. For many of us, that’s over 50 years away! It’s important to consider not rushing in to the rest of your life straight after school, and to enjoy your youth whilst you’re not tied down to responsibilities like a career or a family. Taking a Gap Year is the perfect opportunity for doing just that.

A problem with Gap Years, though, is that people often have problems in raising sufficient funds to support or prolong their trip – but do not fret! Teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) is a fantastic opportunity to earn money and support life abroad. There are jobs throughout Africa, Asia, Central America, North America, Europe and the UK. There are varying durations and intensities of work placements, and some employers even cover the costs of flights, insurance and housing. This can mean you are left with even more money to enjoy your time there or travel somewhere else afterwards.
TEFL is an option for anyone who can speak English at a native or near-native level.  You don’t need any experience in teaching at all, and once enrolled on a course you will have free, lifetime access to the TEFL Job Centre, meaning you are kept up to date with hundreds of exclusive TEFL employment vacancies throughout the world.Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, Brazil, Spain, Hungary, China – these are only a few of the countries looking for English teachers!
It’s not an opportunity that generations before us have had, and travelling is a widely accepted aspect of life nowadays. It’s therefore important to seize this opportunity and see the world. You can truly make a difference somewhere that may have limited resources and limited opportunities. In completing a TEFL England course and moving abroad to teach, you will gain new experiences, make new friends and really benefit a local community and its students.Even if, like many people, you’re not sure what you want to do with your life and can’t decide on any definite career path, a TEFL experience can be inspiring, and you may realise ambitions or dreams that you never knew you had.
So, go for it! Complete a TEFL course and see the world before embarking on University, College or ‘real’ life. You never know, though; real life might meet you there.
