Indispensable Travel Insurance

My kids had started their vacation after the exams.  Two teenage boys, full of energy and raring to go, easily bored at home, the sweltering heat of Dubai in May; well, something had to be done!!  My husband couldn’t accompany me on any of the tours that were being suggested.  Finally, we decided to visit my cousin sister in London and spend time with her family for a fortnight.  My family thought it was a good idea as they hadn’t visited their cousins since almost two years.  My husband decided to make the arrangements for our travel.

One question that invariably rose was if it was necessary to have travel insurance or we could do without it since we were visiting and staying with our family members.  We mulled over the issue and finally decided it was better to be safe than sorry, especially with our energetic teenagers.  We opted for the travel insurance no matter how secure our trip was going to be.

We reached London and were happy to be in a pleasant and cooler atmosphere.  We occupied ourselves with small shopping trips, watching plays and sightseeing the nearby places during the first week.  After about ten days, we decided to take a ‘hop-on, hop-off bus tour’ that would take two days and we would be able to cover more of the sightseeing of the famous places.  We booked ourselves and were very excited getting into the open double-decker buses.  My boys were super-excited!

At one of the stops on the second day, as I was descending the stairs, I tripped and fell headlong to the bottom.  I had fractured my right wrist and bruised my ankle.  My cousin was of great help, nevertheless, I informed my husband and he told me not to worry since I had already started calculating the cost and how my budget would go for a toss!  After the initial first-aid and getting myself into a cast, I felt remorse as the holiday had been marred.  My boys kept encouraging me and called me ‘wounded soldier’!

In the meantime, my husband had informed me that he had got in touch with the insurance company and that I just had to carry all the medical prescriptions and bills duly signed by the doctors in London. That’s all!  He was helped by the staff and the travel insurance company dealt with the claim in a smooth manner.  Within a week, we were reimbursed. Frankly, I felt relieved at knowing that the cost was covered and wouldn’t make a hole in my pocket!
